    Spring Break Planning Tips

Spring Break 101 - Before You Leave

The first semester of the academic year is now underway. Before you know it the end of the year has crept up on you and you’ll be pulling all-nighters for finals. Don’t treat your Spring Break planning like a cram session. Here are some helpful tips to ease the pain of planning your Spring Break.
    1. Take Your Travel Budget to the Max
Start your planning with a set budget. Determine what is the most you are willing to spend, and can afford, for the trip. This will help narrow down choices when researching destinations and activities. Talk to your friends that are going with you. Make sure everyone is on the same page and in the same price range.
    2. When Money Matters
Saving a few extra dollars can make a difference in creating the ultimate Spring Break experience. If you talk to your friends and find that you are short on cash and rolling with a smaller budget, don’t worry. You don’t have to be left behind. Stack your paper with these tips and tricks:
    • Ask the ‘Rents – There are plenty of special occasions that you can use to get the parents to pay for your trip. Make it your first choice for a Christmas, birthday, or graduation present.
    • Get a Job – Work a part-time, seasonal, or temporary gig and set aside the money you make. If you save $25 per week from October until March, you will cover the cost of your trip and then some.
    • Skip the Starbucks – Saving is sacrifice. Skip the latte or late night pizza run and put the money you would have spent in your piggy bank. Just think how much money you’ll save…and weight you might lose, by stashing away $5 everyday.
    • Book Buy-back – You might have spent a grip on your books. Don’t let them collect dust when you’re done the semester. Sell them back to the bookstore or online. You usually get paid a small percentage of what you actually spent, but every little bit counts. Remember, the better the condition of the book, the more money you get.
    • In Case of Emergency - If you have no other choice than to use plastic to pay for your Spring Break trip, make sure that you plan to pay back this debt as soon as possible. Look for a low or no interest rate card and pay the minimum, or more, to avoid additional charges.
    3. Determine What’s Important
You’ve figured out how much you’re going to spend and how to get the money. Now it’s time to figure out where you’re going to go. What exactly do you want to do while on Spring Break. Do you want to spend a lazy day on the beach basking in the sun? Do you want to party all night long and sleep all day? Do you want to get away from home, yet still have all the conveniences of home? What is more important, location or accommodations? These are questions to consider when evaluating destinations. To get the answers, take time out to do a little homework on your top destination choices (try to keep it to a max of 3). Check out travel sites to learn about the history and cultural of where you want to go. See if there are other events going on while you’re on Spring Break. Here are some ideas to get you started:
    • Best Price – Jamaica
    • Best Beaches - Cancun, Bahamas, or Negril Jamaica
    • Large Nightclubs - Acapulco or Cancun
    • Casual Nightlife - Negril Jamaica or Puerto Vallarta
    • All the conveniences of home - Cancun, Nassau, Panama City, or South Padre
